“Where’s the Beef?”: The Method Behind the Madness – Decals with Curtis Houston

Workshop Summary: Oct 17^th – 18^th

In this workshop Curtis Houston will be discussing and demonstrating wheel techniques, how a vessel’s form relates to using decals, and the techniques for applying decals to vessels.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to Curt’s ceramic practice, focusing on the relationship between form and surface and how the two inform one another. He will discuss why his forms remain intentionally simple, evolving in response to the decal process and the visual demands of the surface. Drawing from memory and personal experience, Curt’s work references vintage coffee cans, pantry containers, and other everyday objects from small-town Southern life, influences that continue to shape both his forms and imagery.

Participants will observe demonstrations of wheel-throwing and form-building techniques, with an emphasis on proportion, repetition, and functional design.

The session will then transition into glazing and surface decoration, exploring how glazes interact with ceramic decals and how layered surfaces can enhance imagery and create greater visual depth. Curt will discuss material choices and demonstrate approaches that support the integration of image and form.

The workshop will conclude with a demonstration and guided practice in the application of ceramic decals. Participants will apply decals to mugs provided by the artist, gaining firsthand experience with the techniques and considerations involved in achieving successful transfers.
