When One’s Negative Space Becomes the Positive for Another.
Exhibition - "The 'Drops': Negative and Positive Space - A Collaborative Exhibit by Carolyn A. Land & Fredrick Goldstein
The collaboration begins with absence. In the sculptures, negative spaces are not
simply empty area surrounding a form it is an active element that shapes the work
as much as the steel itself. Openings, cutouts, voids and passages allow the eye to
move through the sculpture, creating rhythm, tension and balance. These spaces
that are removed become visual events rather than empty gaps.
For this collaboration, the pieces removed from the sculpture are given a second
life. What functions as negative space in the sculpture becomes positive space in
the painting. The painter transforms these cut forms into new composition,
allowing viewers to experience the same shape from two opposing perspectives.
One work is defined by what is absent; the other is defined by what is present.
This exchange highlights an important idea: positive and negative space are not
opposites but partners.

Yes it is! Opening on July 4th thru July 30th, this exhibition will be part of the First Saturday Gallery Walk. During gallery walk, held every First Saturday of each month, the New Smyrna Beach downtown art galleries host exhibition openings with beer and wine for purchase. Land draws inspiration from Goldstein’s sculptures, particularly the organic metal drops that add dimension to her collages. These pieces transform from negative space in sculpture to positive space in painting, creating a dialogue between absence and presence. This interplay emphasizes the idea that positive and negative spaces are not opposites but partners, culminating in their exhibition titled *The ‘Drops’: Negative and Positive Space.
