Box Building: Hard Slab Construction with Mishima Decoration with Nancy Newlove McElroy

Box Building: Hard Slab Construction with Mishima Decoration with Nancy Newlove McElroy

November 14th and 15th. 1PM – 4PM

Note: This is a two day workshop that takes place on a Saturday and a Sunday.

This workshop will teach us the Mishima technique to create surface design by inlaying colored slip.
Day 1 – We will build a four-inch square box using leather hard slabs of B-Mix white clay without grog.  Your patterns will be mapped out at this time.
Day 2 – Using your unique personal line design, we will be incising the leather hard surface.  The depressions are filled with black slip. Once the slip has stiffened, the piece is lightly scraped with a flexible metal rib.  Our boxes will be once fired to cone 5, resulting in a vitrified Mishima decorated cream colored clay box with your black line design.
Artists that have used this technique are Harrison McIntosh and Sumiko Takada.
